TOP 10 LONGEST RUNNING VAMPIRE COMICS!

Posted In: Vamperotica Spotlight

- compiled by Paul Alexander

Our criteria for this list was very simple. The book title/character with the most issues with an appearance wins. That includes mini/maxi series’, magazines, one-shots etc. Anything that shows the title/character in comic form. Reprints, trade paperbacks, omnibus’ were not included. The trick was trying to research through as many issues as possible, making sure most of the stories were first run. One major thing that I noticed is that over the last 10 – 15 years, most publishers released mini-series’ instead of continuous runs. Another trend is the re-booting, or re-numbering of a series’.

When listing each selected title/character we listed the year of origin and publisher. In the case of multiple publishers throughout the years the oldest publisher is listed first to the most recent, separated by commas (i.e. Warren, Harris, Dynamite Publishing). When published under an imprint, the parent company precedes the imprint company by a colan (i.e. Image:Cliffhanger). When able, an image of the first appearance cover is posted.

As always, it would be great to hear from you, so if you have any comments, and/or updated information pertaining to any character/title count, just CLICK HERE to contact us.

#10. CHASTITY (1995/Chaos Comics/Dynamite) TOTAL = 33

In 1976, an American, Chastity Marks, did what any 17-year old abused by their father did – runaway. Her dream was to be an actress and she wanted to travel to London and train with the Royal Shakespeare Company, but only made it to New York on Halloween broke and hungry. After being caught up in the seedy side of life, she finally made it to London and her dream only to be turned away at the door. It was then that Chastity was swept up in the Punk Rock scene and ran with a band called The Nobs. She was later attacked by a Vampire called Farley. It was then that her life would change forever. Chastity’s first appearance was in Chaos Comics’ 5-issue series Evil Ernie: Straight to Hell. From that point on she appeared in multiple mini-series and crossover throughout the Chaos Comics world.

#9. MORBIUS, THE LIVING VAMPIRE (1971/Marvel) TOTAL= 71

Dr. Michael Morbius was a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist dying from a rare disorder dissolving his blood cells. Michael began secretly (is there any other way these thing are done?), working on a cure as not to give fear to his fiancee Martine. He attempted using distilled fluids from bats to rid his disease. Experimenting with such formulas on his yacht, Michael had his assistant Nikos run an electrical shock through his system. The combination profoundly changed Michael’s body, transforming him into something resembling a Vampire. Driven by the hunger for blood, Morbius slew Nikos. Fearful that he would strike at Martine, Morbius tried ending his life by jumping into the ocean, he failed. Mans inner need for self-preservation led him to escape the water’s embrace. I have always thought that Morbius had potential to be a cool character. With the success of the first Blade movie I thought they might tap Morbius next, yet no one has taken the character to task.

#8. 30 DAYS OF NIGHT (2002/IDW) TOTAL= 83

Idea + Design Works first published this limited series about Vampires in Barrow, Alaska in 2002. Located in the northernmost part of Alaska. Temperatures average below freezing from mid-November to mid-December there is no Sun. Sheriff Eben Olemaun and his wife, Stella, discover that something is quite not right on the eve of their first thirty days of night. Amongst the rise in crime, one in particular that destroys all communication devices, a mysterious stranger appears, asking for raw meat. It is far to late when they realize that it is Vampires who have invaded Barrow. The Vampires turn the town into a buffet, killing and feeding on all the townspeople. The Sheriff discovers a way to save his wife and the town, only the cost may be more than both may realize.

#7. BLADE (1972/Marvel/Marvel:MAX) TOTAL= 94

Eric Brooks’ origin into Blade goes something like this. While pregnant with Eric, his mother was bitten by a vampire named Deacon Frost. Eric was born different, and many around him felt it. It was after finding out the truth about his mother, her death and his birth, Eric decided to hunt down the one who “killed” his mother, and every last Vampire on the face of the Earth. As Blade, Eric is considered The Daywalker. A man with Vampire tendencies and abilities, yet able to survive in the Sun and the direct bite of a Vampire, which he discovered in issue #19 of The Tomb of Dracula. One little note here: I found it funny that it was a secondary character from an obscure title that gave Marvel Comics what is to be considered its first box-office hit.

#6. ANGEL (2007/Dark Horse/IDW) TOTAL= 113

The character of Angel first came to popularity on Joss Whedon’s television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer as the vampire with a soul. For killing a loved one, gypsies put a curse on the then named Angelus that returned his soul to him. Thus, to be forever tormented by the centuries of violent murders he has now become a force for good. Like its parent title, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel is full of the same characterizations as the show in which it has been adapted from. The comic book series continues were the live action television series left off with Season 5.

#5. PURGATORI (1994/Chaos Comics) TOTAL = 114

Chaos Comics was a ground breaker in returning to the Horror genre with the creation of Lady Death and Evil Ernie, two titles I have enjoyed very much. Creators Brian Pulido and Steven Hughes hit the trifecta with the lovely hellspawn of Purgatori. Purgie became just as popular as any of the Chaos creations. Maybe even more so with this run.
The sadness of this all is that artist Steven Hughes lost his long battle with cancer and passed away in 2000 at the age of 46.

#4. THE TOMB OF DRACULA (1972/Marvel/Marvel: Epic) TOTAL= 115

In 1459, Vlad Tepes Dracul was mortally wounded by the Turkish warlord Turac, who brought Vlad to a gypsy named Lianda to be healed. However, Lianda, a vampire, in revenge for Vlad’s persecution of the gypsies, transformed him into the vampire Dracula. Dracula defeated the vampire Nimrod in battle, and thus succeeded him as ruler of Earth’s vampires. Soon afterwards, he enhanced his own blood with that of Varnae, Lord of the Vampires before Dracula, giving him greater powers than any other vampire.
We have creative comic book greats Stan Lee, Gerry Conway, and Gene Colon to thank for bringing back the horror comic in shocking fashion. The characterizations and story-telling is first rate, and Colon’s artwork at times is pure genius.

#3. VAMPEROTICA/LUXURA (1994/Brainstorm) TOTAL= 119

We expected that our very own Vamperotica/Luxura comics would make the list but even we were shocked at how high we placed. First a Vampire anthology comic book, it featured Kirk Lindo’s creation The Vampress Luxura. Soon Luxura became center stage and one of the most revered new female characters in Vampire lore throughout the independent publishing world since Vampirella. Yes, I am being a bit biased, and yet there has not been a female Vampire character to resonate with collectors since Warren’s illustrious Vamp. After the comic books more than five year run, Luxura soon appeared in multiple mini-series’ and crossed over with some equally well-known top independent characters of the time. Luxura’s title count should increase with the new graphic novel in the works.

#2. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (1996/Dark Horse/IDW) TOTAL= 153

Created by Joss Whedon, The Vampire Slayer was based on his 1992 movie starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry. After spending some 5 years in limbo, Buffy returned to the screen, the small screen that is. After 7 seasons the television series ended giving way to a continued Season 8, and now a Season 9, in comic book form. Television gave Whedon the perfect format to expand and create an entire world and mythology for his Vampire Slayer. Now in comic book form, the story-telling is unlimited. Driven by characterization some of the best stories told on the tube came from this and its later spin-off Angel. The recent try for a big screen re-boot failed without her creator involved. Let’s hope it stays that way.

#1. VAMPIRELLA (1969/Warren, Harris, Dynamite Publishing) TOTAL = 309+!

At over 300 issues and still counting, no other comic even comes close to Vampirella! Created by Forrest J. Ackerman, with costume designed by Trina Robbins for Warren Publishing’s b/w magazine Vampirella #1 (1969) which featured a cover by the late great Frank Frazetta. It was comic book great Archie Goodwin who later developed the character from her horror-story hostess role to leading character status. It was the magazine format that saved the famous Vamp from censorship during the late 60’s and early 70’s. Harris Comics acquired the rights in 1983 and sold those rights to Dynamite Entertainment in 2010.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

AMERICAN VAMPIRE (2010/DC Comics) TOTAL = 29

First published with the help of the authorship of famed horror master Stephen King, DC Comics finally is able to make a dent into the world of the Vampire genre. In researching for this article, it was made apparent that DC seemed never really comfortable with the any horror genre under the DC banner until the Vertigo line.

ANITA BLAKE: VAMPIRE HUNTER (2006/MARVEL COMICS) TOTAL = 28

Based on the Laurell K. Hamilton series of novels. With 21 novels in print date, this comic book series is a joint venture between Marvel Comics and Dabel Brothers Production, should have more material then they need for the long haul.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
While researching this article I did find a few things fascinating:

Lots of BUFFY! The large body of work showcasing Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel was way more than I expected.

What’s up with DC?! DC Comics seems to have not done much with Vampires since their inception. Except for the Vertigo line, which seemed to dabble in the genre, as far as any character sticking out in ones mind, they fall very short compared to Marvel.

Way to go Chaos Comics! The amazing thing about this to me was that two of Chaos’ characters made it to our top ten list. Brian Pulido obviously is a Vampire fan!

The Wetham Effect! Prior to The Tomb of Dracula, there was a moratorium on horror comic books thanks to Fredric Wertham and his book The Seduction of the Innocent which caused continued overreaction to horror comics of the 1950s and ‘60s. With the government’s involvement in passing new  laws, many publishers were put out of business, and what was worse is that many fantastic artists were driven out of the industry never to draw again due to the stigma of the day. MAD went from comic book format to magazine so it did not have to deal with such laws, the same for Vampirella when Warren Publishing released the sexy vamp in magazine format by-passing the newly established Comics Code Authority. That is why there were many Westerns, Suspense, Mystery, and Romance comic books during that period. A great book to read on this is The Ten-Cent Plaque: The Great Comic Book Scare and How It Changed America by David Hajdu

THE 2011 TOP 10 HOTTEST FEMALE VAMPIRES!

by admin on December 11, 2011 at 9:16 pm
Posted In: Vamperotica Spotlight

compiled by Paul Alexander -

When we first started putting this list together I thought that it was going to be the easiest writing assignment that I have ever had. How wrong I was. Just when I would think the list was done, another Vamp to consider would come to mind. What was even more difficult are those flicks with the Brides of Dracula. The women to choose from are always fantastic. To select  just one when they are all beautiful and never apart from each other is mind boggling. There is an irresistible attraction to the seductiveness of the female vampire. You know that they are evil, dangerous, and deadly, yet, there is a compelling nature to give in to their desires, even if it means death. Would YOU have the inner strength to resist any of the women on this list? I think not.

So, without further ado …

#10. Monica Bellucci (DRACULA’S BRIDE #1, BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA)

I have yet to see Monica Bellucci in a role with other women and she not be the one that my eyes just gravitate to. She is a natural beauty. The only thing that can be said, is that their was not enough of her in Coppola’s Dracula flick.

#9. Rhona Mitra (SONJA, UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS)

Rhona Mitra came to the forefront of the entertainment industry during her role as Tara Wilson in The Practice (2003) and since then she has never had to look back. Her exotic looks from her Bengali father gives this Vamp her unique beauty. A year before the release of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans it was her role in the movie Doomsday (2008) that seemed to have prepped Ms. Mitra to play the action packed part of Sonja in the prequel to Underworld. If Rhona seems strangely familiar to gamers it is because she was the original model for the video game character, Lara Croft, The Tomb Raider.

#8. Leonor Valera (NYSSA, BLADE 2)

Leonor was born in Chili and studied acting all over the world. The famous, part real, part CGI  fight scene,  in Blade II would have been better without the head gear, but the character of Nyssa is what I would call smoldering hotness. Nyssa’s demise was a nice bit of filming, although it seemed familiar. It was a shame that they killed her off. But this is the movies, and if they could bring Whistler back, then they could do the same with Nyssa, the Vampire Princess. We can only hope.

#7. Aaliyah (AKASHA, ANNE RICE’S QUEEN OF THE DAMNED)

Queen of the Damned was the songstress, Aaliyah’s second venture into acting after playing Trish O’Day in Romeo Must Die (2000). How she would have fared in other films we will never know due to her untimely death. However, she did leave behind one of the hottest and erotic, yet horrifying female Vampire carnage dance scenes to date. The film was released six-months after her tragic plane crash.

#6. Evan Rachel Wood (VAMPIRE QUEEN SOPHIE-ANN, TRUE BLOOD)

Wood was tapped to play the part of Vampire Queen Sophie-Ann in HBO’s hit series True Blood, based on The Southern Vampire Mystery series by novelist Charlaine Harris. The theory behind the character’s motivation was that if one lived for what seemed like centuries, it would drive one to madness. And Vampire Queen, Sophie-Anne does not disappoint. Wood’s riveting performance dominated every scene that she was in. So much so that it has been said that Wood’s portrayal of the character of Sophie in season 2 overshadowed Paquin’s Stackhouse.

#5. Nina Dabrev (KATHERINE PIERCE, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES)

Nina plays a duel role in the CW television program based on the successful novel series by author L.J. Smith.  The first is Elena Gilbert. Elena, a young woman who is the love torn focus between two vampire brothers. The other, Katherine, a ruthless vamp that the same two brothers knew and loved back in the 19th century. It seems that history does tend to repeat itself. For all the female fans wondering how to get those luscious red lips Katherine wore to the Masquerade Ball in Season 2, Episode 7, Nina gives a tutorial here.

#4. Nikki Reed (ROSALIE LILLIAN HALE, TWILIGHT)

In 1933 Rosalie was turned by Carlisle Cullen after being raped and beaten near death by a gang of men, one who was her fiancee. Some years later she saved Emmett Cullen and soon they fell in love and married. That is why this Vamp is protective of the Cullen Clan. There since the beginning, Rosalie protects her family with a fierceness which led her to wanting to kill the main character of Bella, but was talked out of doing so. With her flawless looks and svelte figure Rosalie fosters jealousy for one reason. She cannot have a normal human life.

#3. Julie Benz (DARLA, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL)
Long before Desperate Housewives, No Ordinary Family, and Dexter (nasty ending to her character Rita btw), Julie Benze came to the public’s attention in the role of Darla. First appearing in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series then reprising her role as Darla in the Buffy spin-off, Angel. With each episode the character of Darla grew from just a flashback for Angel in the Buffy series, to a major player once David Boreanaz’ Angel was spun off into his own series.

#2. Salma Hayek (SANTANICO PANDEMONIUM, FROM DUSK TILL DAWN)

Already considered a major actress, it was a surprise to hear that Salma Hayek took a role in Quintin Tarantino’s From Dusk Till Dawn. Although it was one of the briefest of roles, Salma exuded that which would be considered the classic Vamp. Stunning, mesmerizing, and nothing but HOTTNESS. It was the python snake table dance that left movie audiences breathless. Me included. Chalk another one up for Tarantino. I still wonder how he came up with that character name. There is a Santana version of basically the same scene.

#1. Kate Beckinsale (SELENE, UNDERWORLD)

Underworld: Awakening, the next installment of  the Underworld franchise is due to drop in 2012. Kate Beckensale reprises her role as Selene, and we have deemed her the hottest vamp of them all. Yes, we all know the movies are loaded with contacts and computers, but Beckinsale is still able to sell the character during those moments when it counts. Fans constantly gush about the distinct look and feel of the films, but for us, it is Beckinsale’s Selene that makes it all worth watching. She owns this role, and we here at Vamperotica just LOVE women in latex.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

1. Milla Jovovic (VIOLET, ULTRAVIOLET)

Okay, so Violet is not a “true” Vampire in the actual sense of the word. She suffers from a vampric virus and has all the traditional atributes. Violet exudes a HOTTNESS that only Jovovich can emit.

2.  Jeri Ryan (VALARIE SHARPE, DRACULA 2000)

One of Dracula’s three brides. Come on, how could we leave Seven-of-Fine off this list. Now co-starring on ABC’s Body of Proof, Ms. Ryan’s “hotness” is still very much intact!

3. Lucy Liu (SADIE BLAKE, RISE: BLOOD HUNTER)

Rise: Blood Hunter is full of sex, blood, and rock-and-roll co-starring  Michael Chiklis (The Shield’s Vic Mackey). It’s yet another movie genre to add to Liu’s already packed resume. And, no, it is not the Bloodhunter from our very own Vamperotica & Luxura comics.

4. Deborah Ann Woll (JESSICA HAMBY, TRUE BLOOD)

Stuck as a teenager for all eternity, she has left many a body along the roadside of her journey into the night. Once Deborah “grows” into her hottness, it should not be long before she moves up the list.

5. Josie Maran (MARISHKA, VAN HELSING)

As said, it is always difficult to select a single hottie from those that portray Dracula’s Brides, but when Josie Maran’s Marishka graced the big screen — BAM! What a knockout. Sad to say she will not be reprising her role anytime soon.

Well that does it for our 2011 list of Hottest Female Vampires! If any of you Vamps have a remark about your placement, or non-placement on this list, drop us a line. VAMPEROTICA #9 ORIGINAL COVER ART SELLS FOR $180.50

by admin on August 21, 2011 at 3:16 pm
Posted In: Vamperotica Spotlight

Vamperotica #9 Cover Art by Steve Scott & Eman Torre

Finding the covers to any of the original Vamperotica comic series is rare indeed. This is the cover to Vamperotica #9 by D.C. comic artist STEVE SCOTT & veteran Vamperotica inker, Eman Torre. The original art was recently sold on Ebay for $180.50. Steve did quite a lot of work for Vamperotica early in his career before he went off to work for Marvel & D.C. This cover is one of his best. It features the main characters introduced in the Vamperotica comic series; Luxura, Vanthor and Bloodhunter.  The original art is ink & brush work on 11 x 17 bristol.

You no doubt have seen the work of Smallville artist, Steve Scott if you are a fan of the hit TV show. But others have known about his work for quite some time! Steve first made his mark on the comics industry via his sequential art at Malibu Comics, he later gained wider attention after he became the regular artist on the LEGENDS of LUXURA mini-series. His detailed illustrations of Luxura gained him the attention of several publishers and he later went on to create dazzling art for London Night’s Razor as well as New Warriors, Hourman, and JLA for Marvel and DC Comics.

Much like the superheroes he brings to life–Steve led a duel life for more than sixteen years: firefighter by day and artist by night! It took one horrible event to bring those two identities together. On September 11, 2001, he watched, with the rest of the nation as the Twin Towers fell. Soon afterwards, DC Comics published The Worlds Finest Comic Book: Writers & Artists Tell Stories to Remember. Steve was selected among the few to contribute to this historical collection, which was later exhibited, and is now archived, at the Library of Congress.

Free Comic Book Day 2010!

Posted In: Vamperotica Spotlight

Free Comic Book Day was a smashing success! This was our first store appearance in several years and the very first FCBD that we’ve ever done. We thought it only fitting that it be at my good friend Bernie’s store, The Dragons Lair. Anyone who remembers knows that May 1st, 2010 was a gorgeous day and perfect for FCBD.

Some of you who really follow my work will recognize the store sign from my Tales From The Bloodvault movie. Part of it was shot there. The guys in the photo above is Dragon’s Lair owner Bernie and his business partner, Jan.

A few photos of some of the people who showed their support by purchasing signed copies of the SWORD OF THE APOCALYPSE IT BEGINS INTRODUCTION BOOK.

FCBD at Dragon’s Lair is a HUGE event! Vendors, Face Painting, Radio coverage and all sorts of cool stuff!

We set up an Xbox tournament where you could play as one of the characters from the graphic novel. We used the IT BEGINS FCBD TRAILER to promote it. We had 8 contestants who randomly picked a character to compete as. One of the local GAME STOP stores gave me a $50.00 gift certificate for the winner.

We made a SWORD OF THE APOCALYPSE signature poster for fans, friends and customers to sign for us. I thought it was a cool way to remember the event. Every time we do a store or convention appearance I’ll be bringing one of these for people at the event to sign, and when it’s over I’ll hang it somewhere in my studio.

FCBD 2010 was a great success! I saw some old fans and friends and made some new ones. The atmosphere was perfect and turned out to be the best way to launch the SOTA project!
